Who Will be the Heroes of Re-Independence Day?

Over the coming centuries, one day, one individual act, will be revered as the turning point in ending the imbalance of power that the Bush/GOP regime has wrought. It will be remembered as our Re-Independence Day, the day seen as the first when Bush’s house of cards begins to crumble. After that day, we’ll see the return of oversight over Presidential actions by Congress, and this time without Bush’s fail-safe of overreaching Executive Privilege. And we’ll be able to trace the inevitable shift away from corporate control over our policies through the Republo-Fascist rubber stamp madness of Republicans in Congress. And finally Americans will realize that you can’t “support the troops” if you don’t support the TRUTH.
Truth will prevail after all, and a relieved America will see the end of the Nero Con era of Republican control which has cost us so very much. We’ve lost hundreds of thousands of jobs oversees, fueled by GOP tax incentives to do so. Republicans have privatized the vote, the providing of supplies for our soldiers overseas, and even our CIA. And their contributors have made billions in profits from that. Bush’s administration has shaved away many of our freedoms, and worst of all kept us in an unwinable war for the soul purpose of snatching tens of TRILLIONS of dollars from Iraq and its people via the Iraq Oil Production Sharing Agreement. Bush has made passage of that bill in the Iraqi Parliament one of his “benchmarks.”
That, after all, has been Bush’s noble cause all along.
But soon the wheels will be put in motion to undo what we can of the Bush/GOP plan, taken from the radical-right’s Project for a New American Century play book. Their goals of emasculating the American middle class, establishing continual instability in the Middle East, and dumbing down the next generation will not be allowed to run their course. Those have been PNAC’s tools in establishing and maintaining Republican rule over America throughout our generation. But we are wise enough, strong enough, active enough, and informed enough to end PNAC’s dream which throws away a strong future for America solely for their extreme self-interest. The events of the original Re-Independence Day will eventually bring down the hatchet on the PNAC tentacles around the claws of our American Eagle.
And when that tide has turned, all but the complicit will join the universal acknowledgment that the wisdom of the Constitution overrides any other force in this land. That one document defines who Americans are and what we stand for. Defiling it, ignoring it, twisting it, and subjugating it will then only be a sickening part of George W. Bush’s dark legacy.
Who will the heroes be from that day not long from now? What actions will be joined with the lore of Paul Revere and George Washington crossing the Delaware? This glorious day could arrive very soon, perhaps when the US House of Representatives puts the cuffs on Harriet Miers after invoking Inherent Contempt, and Congress wins its first battle over the President. Maybe it will be when Karl Rove answers a Senate subpoena and is tripped up on the stand. Will it be when Bush finally gets tired of fighting it and resigns? Will there be some as yet unknown whistle blower, an insider, that spills his guts and provides the damning details? Or even better, will it be a Republican legislator who finally sees that his career will be sucked down the drain in the Rovian whirlpool of lies if he doesn’t stand against them? Will self-interest finally win over, buoyed by the appearance of having a conscience? Hopefully we won’t have to wait for the 2008 elections when Democrats take the Presidency and a super-majority in Congress for our original Re-Independence Day. Hopefully, whatever the path, Re-Independence Day should be no later than January 20, 2009.
The events remembered on July 4th as our first Independence Day sprang from standing against an overpowering oppressor: England and it’s King George. Our Re-Independence Day will be remembered as the initiating of taking back control from not one oppressor but three. First is the Republican Party with its vote-caging, unitary executive strategies, signing statements, and other tools for sidestepping the law. Second is the Republo-Fascist corporate forces that hold most of the puppet strings over willing Republicans through their lobbyists. The third oppressor is unified block of hard-right Christian zealots and their unsavory influence over tens of millions through their churches and by control of most of America’s open-air and print media.
Re-Independence Day will be tangible as the day where the inevitable collapse of the Nero Cons began. But it will only mark the change in momentum. Even when that day comes, the rejoicing it inspires needs to be redirected to the tasks required. Thankfully, the unity in the voices against the Bush/GOP regime should translate into the unity of purpose in the taking back of our country from corporations, those unwilling to allow freedom of religious thought, and the payola surfers of the Republican Party.
Long live liberty from those threats. We will prevail, and bit by bit all progressives sense it. The mess we will have to clean up may be greater than the Exxon Valdez, and individually we may only be armed with Q-tips. But the fight is there in us. And Democrats who cling too closely to the old guard are likely to be casualties too along with 90% of the sitting Republicans. True progressives will be the force that will redefine our country, and green industries and a resurgent middle class will be our hallmark. We will curtail global warming in time. We will again restrict monopolies and unrestrained capitalism. We will again understand the true value of live and let live, as we look forward to an inclusive future.
Even with all the challenges of righting the thousands of wrongs perpetuated by the Bush administration, we will as a country work for our recovery filled with the hope of our dreams renewed.
And the faces and voices of our new heroes will embody that hope. And we’ll know which day Re-Independence Day should be. The sooner it happens, the fewer of our soldiers will die for a lie.
