Is Mr. Bush Really the President?!
In 2000, a clear majority of Americans voted for Al Gore. But the winner is determined by the Electoral College, so the winner in each state must be considered. The vote in Florida was so close that it took a month to declare a winner. Before Florida was declared, Gore led in the Electoral College with 266 votes to Bush's 246 votes. When Bush was declared the winner of Florida by 537 votes, he picked up 25 Electoral College votes which gave him the Presidency. But Bush only won Florida because of poorly designed butterfly ballots that stole votes from Gore, and because his Florida campaign manager Republican Secretary of State Kathleen Harris and Governor Jeb Bush illegally removed 57,700 voters from the rolls. It is estimated that 90% of them were Democratic. So this represent thousands of votes stolen from Al Gore. If this crime had not been commited then Gore would be President.
No matter what we believe about who really won, we must admit that the election was very close. So one would expect that Bush would respect the opinions and desires of the clear majority of Americans who voted for Gore and Nader. Yet Bush charges ahead, promoting a far right agenda that is repugnant to most Americans, as if he had a mandate from the voters.
When Bush won, I though "Oh well, how bad can it be?" I had no idea.
His aggressive and misguided policies and his ineptitude have already crippled
our economy and threaten to plunge us into war with Iraq and Korea. Unlike
the war in Serbia, these wars will be fought with weapons of mass destruction,
perhaps even nuclear weapons. My question now is "Will we survive until
the next election?".

1/27/01 - CNN reports that "An analysis of a portion of November's votes in Florida for president shows those for Al Gore were far more likely to be disqualified because of so-called overvoting than ballots cast for George W. Bush." This add weight to the argument that Bush did not win the election on the basis of votes cast, but only on votes counted.
