Rally with Cindy Sheehan in NYC broken up by Police
September 19, 2005
An antiwar speech by Cindy Sheehan, the mother of an American soldier killed in Iraq, was cut short yesterday after the organizer of the event was arrested and police officers confiscated his audio equipment. Detective Kevin Czartoryski said Mr. Zulkowitz (aka "Zool") was charged with unauthorized use of a sound device and disorderly conduct, and was released after being given a court summons. According to a video of the event, Zol had applied for a permit but never received a response from the police. A spokesman for the parks department said organizers had a permit for tabling but not for a demonstration.
Sheehan said she wasn't roughed up by police, but was jostled when officers broke up the rally and arrested organizer Paul Zulkowitz. "I think their use of force was pretty excessive for someone that didn't have a permit," she said.
Sheehan gained national recognition during her 26 day vigil outside Bush's ranch in Crawford Texas.
