6/9/08 - Representative Dennis Kucinich introduced a resolution to impeach George Bush on the House floor on June 9th, 2008. It was raised as a "question of privilege" so that it took priority over other business. Our report and analysis is here.
FAQ - In response to recent emails.
Q: Is it a good thing that it was referred to the Judiciary Committee?
A: Yes. The mainstream media is saying the resolution was "scuttled". But referral to Judiciary Committee is the normal process for moving forward with an impeachment resolution. Now HRes 1258 can be fine tuned while we build support in Congress and with the public. But there is a danger. If we cannot convince John Conyers to schedule time for HRes 1258 then it could die.
Q: Is it too late to impeach Bush?
A: No. It only took ten days to impeach Andrew Johnson. In order to say no to Bush's crimes we must at least start the impeachment process. To do nothing for 7 months would tell future Presidents that lying, spying and torture are OK! We know how history will view Bush. But how would they view a Congress that had the power to impeach Bush yet did nothing? More reasons here...
Q: What next?
A: We need to convince our Congress member and John Conyers that we care about the Constitution and expect them to impeach Bush and Cheney. Ask them to cosponsor HRes 1258.
Q: Wasn't Bush just misled by faulty intelligence?
A: No. Bush deliberately shaped the intelligence reports to favor war and then used those reports to mislead Congress.
Q: Don't the 9/11 terrorists deserve to be tortured?
A: Torture is illegal, inhumane and counter-productive. Also the 9/11 pilots died on 9/11. The thousands of people imprisoned and tortured by the US were never tried so we don't know if they are terrorists. Many have been released after years of torture when it became obvious they were innocent. Oops.
Q: How did our Reps vote and what does it mean?
A: Kucinich moved that HRes 1258 be referred to the Judiciary Committee. All of the Democrats and 24 Republicans voted "Aye" (yes). A yes vote could mean that the Representative supported the resolution and wanted to see it developed further in the Judiciary. Or it could mean they wanted to send it to committee for a slow death. Both Pelosi and Wexler voted aye. A no vote on the motion to refer would have resulted in a final vote on the Articles of Impeachment, which would likely have failed. 166 Republicans voted "No".
