Ideas for Student Papers

If you have to write a paper about government for school then shake them up with a paper on impeachment! Here are some suggested thesis questions:

  1. Compare the impeachment charges against Bill Clinton, Andrew Johnson, and Richard Nixon with the potential charges against George Bush.
  2. Should the US Government continue torturing prisoners and holding them without formal charges? Is it legal? Is it an effective means of obtaining information? What did Bush mean when he said "We do not torture."? Who is Maher Arar?
  3. Is it worth giving up our privacy by allowing the NSA to scan telephone calls and other communications in order to detect threats to our security? What is the potential for abuse of this system by a President who considers dissent unpatriotic? What is Echelon? What is the difference between the terms "detect" and "monitor" as used by President Bush?
  4. Was Bush misled by faulty intelligence into thinking Iraq was a threat, or did he shape the intelligence in order to mislead Congress and the public?
  5. Does a US President have to comply with International Laws like the UN Charter, the Nuremberg Principles and the Geneva Convention? Did Bush violate those laws?
